Teenage Brave Girl in J & K

When militants barged into her home in the dead of night, beat her parents senseless and turned on her, Rukhsana decided she wouldn’t go down without a fight.

Mustering all her courage, the frail 18-year-old managed to get her hands on an axe, attacked one of them with it and then shot him dead with his own gun.

She had never fired — let alone held — a gun before

The dead man turned out to be Lashkar e Toeba commander Abu Usama. His two accomplices managed to escape.

Recalling the terror that unfolded on Sunday (Sep. 27, 2009) in her home in Rajouri (J & K), Rukhsana said the terrorists accused her father of being an informer and rained blows on him and her mother.

When Ruksana saw her parents lying unconscious, she thought they’d died. A divine force gave her the courage to pull down the terrorist by his hair, hit him with the axe and snatch his rifle.”

The police were tightlipped about the motive of the militants but said Rukhsana would be rewarded for her courage.

Rukhsana’s story is a sign of the changing times — militants once sheltered by locals are now losing support.

1 Rocket :: 7 Satellites

Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) successfully launched on a booster rocket to orbit the country's 16th remote sensing satellite and six European nano satellites on Wed. 23 September 2009. Out of the six nano satellites, four are from Germany, one from Switzerland and one from Turke

The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) was launched at from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on the island of Sriharikota. It is the vehicle's 16th launch since September 1993.

Of the 15 remote sensing satellites India has so far launched, nine are still in operation, including the Oceansat-1, which was put into orbit in 1999.

PSLV-14

Oceansat-2 is the sixteenth remote sensing satellite of India. The state-of-the-art Oceansat-2 carries three payloads and has the shape of a cuboid with two solar panels projecting from its sides.

The 960 kg main payload, Oceansat-2, was the first satellite to be injected into orbit at 1081 seconds after lift-off at an altitude of 728 km. About 45 seconds later, four of the six nano satellites were separated in sequence. The initial signals indicate normal health of the satellites. PSLV-C14 mission carried six nano satellites - Cubesat 1, 2, 3 and 4 as well as Rubin 9.1 and 9.2 - as auxiliary payloads along with Oceansat - 2. The weight of these nano satellites was in 2-8 kg range. Oceansat - 2 and the six auxiliary payloads were placed in a polar Sun Synchronous Orbit inclined at an angle of 98.28 degree to the equator.

This was the sixteenth mission of ISROs workhorse launch vehicle PSLV and its fifteenth consecutive success.

Salute to ISRO

The Chandrayaan-1 probe had found traces of water across the surface of large parts of the moon, challenging the long-held view that the earth’s natural satellite is bone dry.

The spacecraft also found indications that water is being produced in the lunar soil through interactions with charged particles streaming out from the sun.

Indication of Water in Lunar Soil

This major discovery is a vindication of the Chandryaan-1 mission, which encountered many problems and finally ended abruptly last month.

The Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3), a U.S.-supplied instrument that flew on the Chandrayaan-1, examined the intensity of different colours of sunlight bouncing off the lunar surface.

Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3)

In a paper being published online this week by Science, American and Indian scientists report that the instrument found a distinctive signature of water and hydroxyl emanating from the moon. (A water molecule is made up of one oxygen atom linked to two hydrogen atoms, while hydroxyl has the oxygen atom attached to just one hydrogen atom.)

The M3 discovered the signature of water and hydroxyl on the surface soil and rocks at many diverse places in sunlit regions of the moon. The signature was stronger at the higher latitudes. Two U.S. space missions, Cassini and the Deep Impact spacecraft, had provided supporting evidence.

What was detected was water molecules present in extremely minute quantities on the surface soil and rocks, noted J. N. Goswami, director of the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad and principal scientist for the Chandrayaan-1. He estimated that less than a teaspoon of water could be squeezed out from several kg of lunar soil.

The widespread distribution of water seen by M3 was “a complete surprise,” said Lawrence Taylor of the University of Tennessee in the U.S., one of the authors of the paper. Scientists have begun finding signs of water in some lunar minerals.

Discovery with the help of Chandrayaan-1 has made all of INDIANS proud.
